Pushing forward with Location Based services
I’ve started on my idea of putting up location based services several years back. It started out as a hobby to put up the Ortigas Online web site to host a map and directory of shops, offices and buildings located in Ortigas Center. My idea back then was for people to be able to easily find establishments in Ortigas on the web. Actually it was more so that I can easily find them when I’m looking for a place in Ortigas since I worked in the area.
Besides creating web sites, I am very fascinated with the idea of the mobile phone evolving into something more and more like a computer that we use everyday to surf the web. I’m actually fortunate enough to be seeing this happening now.
More and more computer like mobile phones like Nokia N900 or Android phones like the Samsung Spica are being available on the market. These mobile phones have GPS as a standard feature not to mention fast processors and high resolution displays. These features allow people to create services that allow consumers to use their phone to find things like shops, products, services that are actually near their current location by using the GPS on their mobile phones.
This is such a great thing both for mobile phone users and business establishments for one main reason – discoverability. It’s now easier for people to find what they need and for business to be found by people.
For me, it’s great since I would now be able to start pushing forward with ideas that I have for quite a while. So now what actually began as a hobby with ortigas.com will now actually become my own startup. I’ve done quite a bit of work already to get it started and during the coming months I am planning to create services that would allow people to access Ortigas Online using their mobile phone. Really exciting times ahead!
